The major is a part of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, an academic unit within the College of Science and Mathematics.

The Chemistry major focuses on the study of the composition and behavior of matter, emphasizing hands-on learning. Students take foundational lecture and laboratory courses in all sub-disciplines of chemistry: analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic and physical. There are opportunities to take advanced courses in these areas, as well as courses in cross disciplinary areas such as environmental, materials, nuclear and polymers.

The undergraduate experience is further enhanced by participation in undergraduate research with a faculty member, using modern laboratories and state-of-the-art instrumentation. Conducting research and presenting results builds technical, critical thinking and communication skills that are highly valued by graduate and professional schools, as well as industry and government employers.

Refer to the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry website for more information on programs of study, courses, undergraduate research opportunities and careers.

Declaring the Major

New Freshmen and Transfer Students
Students should declare the chemistry major when they register for orientation.

Currently Enrolled Major Changers
Current students wishing to declare or change a major, minor or pre-professional program must complete a request through MyMadison. Additional department specific information will be available when that academic plan is selected.  Follow all directions and steps necessary to execute your request.  Once all necessary steps are completed, the department will either approve or deny your request or contact you for additional information.

For additional assistance making this request, view the Change/Declare a Major/Minor tutorial in MyMadison or on the tutorials website.

Progressing in the Major

CHEM 131, General Chemistry, and CHEM 131L, are the prerequisites for other required chemistry courses.

A grade of at least "C-" must be achieved in CHEM 131 and CHEM 131L to progress in the major.
